Progress, Grand Haven Twp is moving forward on traffic calming

I appreciate the research that the “Slow Lakeshore” group has completed with regard to pedestrian and bicycle safety along Lakeshore Drive.

I discussed the proposed Best Management Practices outlined and instructed Township Manager Cargo to gather cost estimates for (1) Intersection Bike Crossing Markings for use along the paved shoulders at intersections; (2) a different Marked Crosswalk that utilizes more visible pedestrian crosswalks; and (3) the use of In-Roadway Yield Signs for the pathway crosswalks along Lakeshore Drive.  I plan to utilize these cost estimates and propose these improvements for the 2017 Fiscal Year.

Again, I appreciate your taking the time to email the Township and agree that improvements to these crosswalks should occur.

Sincerely,

Karl French
Township Supervisor

Dear Mr. Locke:

I appreciate the information and will request that the Ottawa County Road Commission provide some cost estimates to utilize the (1) Intersection Bike Crossing Markings; (2) A different Marked Crosswalk; and (3) the use of In-Roadway Yield Signs for the crosswalks along Lakeshore Drive.

As I receive the cost estimates, I will forward you the information and discuss with the Board for inclusion in the 2017 Fiscal Year budget.

As you may be aware, we have begun to re-paint the pathway crosswalks on an annual basis and contracts have been awarded for 2016.  So I would be doubtful that these changes could be implemented within the next few months.  That said, I do believe that the ideas contained within the booklet have merit and should be offered to the elected officials – especially for Lakeshore and Mercury Drive; and, perhaps, other roadways.

I will be back in touch after I receive the cost estimates.

Warm Regards,

William D. Cargo
